It's my opinion that every new sub-series of Sonic, like Adventure, Advance, Rush etc. And they also listen to feedback, and are willing to entirely omit "& Friends" characters if they recognize they're holding the franchise back. Across the entire Sonic main series on handhelds and home consoles then, you'll see it having shifted between multiple directors, producers and writers - just for one, the writer they used in Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed was a professional writer for anime who wrote 13 episodes of Sonic X, which is why Sonic 06 had such a preference for the "Human friend whose world is enriched by Sonic & friends!" theme or generally Sonic Unleashed seems like it's really light on past game references. I agree on the example of Sonic Rush but what that stems from is that the creative leadership of those titles specifically were shared. But a canon it is not, and wasn't really intended as such. I wish games were better at franchise storytelling (although, yuck as someone who dislikes MCU, please not that type) but I think Sonic is far from the only case where the story iterates on itself between titles because there really was no intended Canon, just whichever cool character designs they came up with at the time, which the series leadership then decides is cool and beloved enough to reference it again later.
